AI Tutorial Review

In this lesson, we learnt how to use Adobe Illustrator.
I found it really fun because i was able to play around with different fonts and gradients.
For each step, i have put a screenshot.

This will help me and has helped me today because i can recall back to these if i get stuck.

The software was easy and fun to use.

I was also able to try out shapes and flares.
This was good because i was able to manipulate the anchor points.

Magazine proposal finished (plain text)

Magazine Proposal

Good morning/afternoon Editors,
My name is Jessica Isaacs and I am here to propose to you a great idea for a new music magazine.

My music magazine is called MusicDanceStyle.
MusicDanceStyle is a music/dance magazine with fashion advice and articles on new and upcoming artists and dancers for the readers.

My chosen musical genre is Pop/Lyrical.

Pop is mostly listened to by children, young people and adults. The genre appeals to all ages – although, some artists swear in their music which can be seen as inappropriate and/or offensive to certain religions and races. MusicDanceStyle sees this - but is also about positive and cleaner types of music for all ages, not just a select group. Some pop songs include Cold Water by Justin Bieber, Don't Look Down by Martin Garrix and Light it Up by Major Lazor.

However, Lyrical music is taken from the dance style lyrical, which is used to express the artist’s feelings in an artistic or striking way. This simply means "beautiful music."

Lyrical songs include Angel by Scarlett Cherry, Epiphany by Angela Predhomme, Say Something and the piano version of You Can Be Anything from the Wizards of Oz (featuring Glenna Bree). Lyrical music has less profanity in the words. Because the tune itself is so beautiful, to put taboo lexis into it would ruin the genre of the song and the message the artist is trying to communicate to the audience.

MusicDanceStyle is different to other music magazines, because it only really focusses on two genres of music - as well as dance and fashion. MusicDanceStyle would star up and coming musicians, artists and dancers. Students and young stars would also be able to contribute to the articles in the magazine, more articles and less advertisements so it doesn't stray away from the purpose of the magazine. Because it is a type of "stars by stars" magazine, the cost wouldn't be as much as magazines like Billboard - which charge up to £5 for one copy - and that magazine is mostly advertisements

By combining the two styles together, you get an upbeat but powerful and emotional piece of music. You also get a creative view of the style and a fusion of love, passion and beauty.

I hope you like my idea and I will now take questions.

Thank you for listening.

Newsstand Task (a)

Newsstand task (a)

This picture shows how magazines are shelved and displayed.

They are grouped in categories; such as women, men, kids, entertainment, music, film and gossip.

This helps buyers in terms of time and efficiency - as they don't have to spend hours and hours trying to find a magazine mixed up in a pile of unorganized leaflets, magazines and adverts. By organizing them into genres, buyers can also compare magazines in terms of price, articles and appeal.

LSCSS Evaluation

LSCSS Evaluation

For my college magazine, I had to create a front cover and a contents page.
For this, I used multiple types of technology such as:
  • Adobe Photoshop (for construction)
  • Adobe InDesign (for construction)
  • Google Chrome (for research and planning)
  • Microsoft Word and eBlogger (for evaluation)

For my front cover, I used photoshop. I decided to use photoshop because I had used it before in core art in years 8 through 9 so I had a good understanding of how to use it effectively. I researched a variety of pictures online but couldn’t find a good one.  My page layout was portrait - and I used gutters to make sure I didn’t let the images/masthead bleed out.

So I decided to use my friend, Shea, as a model for my college magazine. Once I got the headshots and mid-waist shots from Shea, I started to layout my front page.
I used a midwaist body shot for my front page, in the picture, he is reading a book, looking confused. I also used puffs to accentuate the coverlines and main points. I didn’t use as many puffs in the left third, instead I used plain text. I did this because I didn’t want the page to look too cramped with extras.

For my contents page, I used Adobe InDesign™, originally, I was meant to do the contents as a double page spread, but I decided to do a single page spread because it looked so much better. My page layout was portrait - and I used gutters to ensure I didn’t let the images/masthead bleed out.

I used shapes like stars and hearts – and I even signed the bottom of the editorial to make it even more unique. I took the picture for the contents in the Hairspray auditions, when all the lighter girls were auditioning. I took the picture from a higher angle, plus, I used less extras on my contents because I didn’t want to stray away from the actual purpose of the page.

Mockup

This is my mock-up for MusicDanceStyle. I decided to draw the mock-up so that I would essentially have a real idea of where everything goes physically.

I also used gutters as if I was designing the digital version.

I used the gutters so that when I drew all the pictures, coverlines and detailing onto the cover, it wouldn't "bleed out".

Textual Analysis for DPS (NME Magazine)

The pages are portrait, put together its landscape. More features are used on this spread, for example, much brighter colours like red and cyan. White, grey and black is also spotted around the spread.  The page is a lot brighter by far. The audience for this type of magazine is for young people/musicians.

The language used is formal. The story is about M.I.A’s journey as an artist from 2007 to present day. It also talks about her previous collaborations with artists such as Skrillex, Zayn, Dexta Daps, etc.

The picture has been taken at a high angle, because MIA is actually slightly looking up, not looking directly at the reader/audience. The picture is also very bright – so draws attention to her appearance.

The story is in columns – and drop caps have been used at the beginning. This gives the article a more formal and serious look overall.  It clearly isn’t just a pop article for kids.

Textual Analysis for contents and editorials (NME Magazine)

Page Layout

On this editorial and contents page, there are low angle shots, showing a man and his friend on a bicycle, looking down. This type of shot asserts dominance – but by the way they are dressed, or lack thereof, they look slightly intimidating; even if that wasn’t the intention. On the cover, there was a four colours used – yellow, black, orange and hints of white.

On the contents page, six colours are used – as well as the digital photography used on the page, colour has also been incorporated into the “sections” part of the magazine (Agenda, Radar and Live). In the picture, the colours used are yellow, navy, grey, green, white and black. All the colours attract the reader and the audience because we live in a world of colour – and if the picture is a good quality, it’s almost real.

Language
The language used by the editor is very formal, as if he was writing a letter to the audience – telling us what inspires him.
He talks about a young refugee in his editorial and explains how it “reduced him to tears”. He also talks about the coverstar, M.I.A.
The editorial is structured in columns, and is tightly wrapped around the editors’ headshot.
This is effective because some lines are shorter than others.

Genre

NME is a music, fashion and film magazine. It is also an advertising program.  New and coming artists like M.I.A. are showcased in magazines like this to get exposure and views.

Editorial and contents analysis

On this editorial and contents page, there are low angle
shots of Pitbull in the right third, as well as an annotated copy of the cover to show where everything is (as well as the text below)

The language used is informal – the contents page is more like a blog than a formal magazine. It’s mainly directed at kids, as they understand simpler language.
Its structured so that everything has its own placement in the magazine.

Puffs as well as little coverlines and pictures are used to give little facts as well as “gossip” about the featuring stars in the magazine, such as Pitbull, JB, JLS, etc.

The editor (Zoe) writes to the audience (girls aged 8-13+) as friends, the way the magazine contents page is structured well, but written informally.

Textual Analysis for NME - part 1

Textual Analysis for NME Magazine
Jessica Isaacs
AS Media
S1600384

Task: Research real music magazines - textual analysis on contents, front cover and DPS.

 Masthead:
The masthead is front and centre of the magazine - it has been filled in with yellow and has been outlined with black. this gives it a bolder effect to the audience and to the readers. NME stands for "New Musical Express."

Main image
The main image is of M.I.A, who is an up and coming artist in the music industry. The photographer has taken the picture from a mid-shot angle, and the artist is looking directly into the camera. This gives an effect of dominance upon the reader. M.I.A is also wearing bright colours, and her top looks like a bumblebee. so its going to attract attention.

Dateline
The dateline is quite faint, you cannot see it very clearly, but the dateline is just above the masthead. This is to tell subscribers to the magazine when it was published and how often it is published.

Coverlines
there are two coverlines on this issue of the magazine - and its placed directly underneath M.I.A's main coverline (her name in blacked out letters) The coverline under the main coverline says "Here comes trouble" which could say to the audience that she is troublesome.

Page Layout:
There are distinguishing features on the cover - such as the small puff under the masthead that shows what is in the magazine: "Music, Film and Style".

Flat pack

The main image for the cover is mainly inspirational words – this could’ve been used to trigger confidence and fire in a student or a whole audience.

The masthead is front and centre with the dateline underneath. There isn't a bar-code so the magazine is probably an electronic version or e-book.

The words have all been arranged in a special way so that everything fits and that the cover looks very colourful and vibrant (eye-catching). the magazine could have also had an intent and purpose to guide students follow/achieve their next step.

DPS Analysis

The picture is of Jessie J (Jessica Ellen Cornish).

The article is about her career and what she’s hoping to do. going forward.

Bright colours like yellow and shades of gold are used. White, pink, purple and black is also spotted around the spread.
The page is very fun looking (with polkas).

The audience for this type of magazine is for young people/musicians. She talks about wanting to shave her head for children in need to raise money for underprivileged parts of the world and underprivileged/malnourished children in third world countries.

The structured columns are tightly wrapped around the images - like Jessie's picture on the Voice and her body shot (taken from middle).  Jessie appears to look down slightly, but is still looking direct. Puffs are also used to quote from the article. The language used is formal - even though it's for young musicians, the language is not in anyway informal or derogatory.

Overall genre: Pop

Front Cover Textual Analysis

Masthead (logo)
The logo is front and centre of the magazine, the masthead is usually the first thing you see on the shelf when buying, so its important for it to be colourful and bold. (eye-catching)

Dateline
The dateline is below the the barcode - this shows when it was published.  The dateline can be useful for magazine subscription - so readers know what date new magazines can be delivered.

Main image

The main image is of Rita Ora - a global phenomenon from Kosovo. Rita inspires young musicians with her story and persuades others to speak up and take it to the top.

The main image has been partly covered with puffs - although, there are more pictures scattered saying whats in the magazine, like an informal contents page.
Coverlines

There are multiple coverlines on the front cover. They all advertise the stories within the magazine, like Rita Ora, JLS, Lawson - as well as Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

Main cover line
The main coverline is for Rita Ora's story: "How cool is                                                                                   Rita Ora?" this technique is called "asking a rhectorical                                                                                   question" because you cant put an infinite measure on how                                                                             awesome somebody is.

Left third
On the left third of the magazine, there                                                                                                       are pictures scattered to say what other stories are within                                                                             the magazine. These include: JLS, Lawson - as well as                                                                                   Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.  All of these stories are                                                                                   probably on a single page or in the gossip section.

Selling line
There isn't a selling line in this magazine.

My Genre

Image result for pop lyrical

Hey!
Welcome back to my blog. For my magazine I have chosen to write about music in the pop/lyrical genre.

The reason I chose this genre was because I find that lyrical songs are very poetic, and they have a story behind them (e.g. Someone like You and You Can Be Anything). I also have an interest in contemporary/lyrical dance - and I am inspired by a dancer called Kalani Hilliker, she inspires me as a singer, as a dancer and as a person.

Pop/lyrical music is what I sing best - I have been singing for the best part of my life. I started singing when I was 3. From then, I have always been trying to reach perfection.
